Everything You Need to Know About 1950s Fashion | Lindy Bop

Rock n’ roll, boogie-woogie, elegance and glamour, what could it be? It’s the 1950’s of course! After the Great Depression and World War ll, there was a rise of the teenager, economic gains and as a result more affluent dressing. Freedom filled the streets, women started to gain independence, and society became consumer driven. The hardships and rationing of the war and “make do and mend” years were finally over, replaced by an exciting time filled with anticipation to get out and pick up your mass produced ready to wear, got-to-have “it” new garments. Led by Christian Dior in 1947 New Look(s) entered the fashion world, and the waist-cinching swing dresses that followed became iconic timepieces for years to come.

As a vintage-inspired clothing company, we adore 1950s fashion. Since 2011 we have created fun, feminine, and flattering clothing inspired by classic garments from bygone eras – all fitted and designed for the modern woman.

Got the jitterbug to try a new style? We’re walking you through how to build your very own fifties fashion wardrobe for 2019 in five easy steps, covering everything you need to know about 1950s fashion. These five pieces are guaranteed to lay the foundations to your very own 1950’s fashion wardrobe. For a modern commercial feel mix the following versatile staples with your everyday outfits or try adding some costume jewellery and Mary Jane Cuban heels for a more retro authentic look.

THE SWELL SWING DRESS

Our most popular 1950’s fashion shape is the swing dress, which has a fitted bodice and a wide flared skirt section, creating that coveted hourglass figure. This style gives the classic fifties feminine silhouette and flatters all body shapes. We stock several 50s dresses with many different necklines and sleeve types. Our bestselling ‘Lana‘ dress is a sleeveless swing style with a scoop neckline and a detachable belt that nips in the waist. Our ‘Bella‘ dress has a flattering sweetheart neckline with ruching across the bust and shoulders.

THE PINUP PETTICOAT

Up the ante and increase the volume by completing your fifties fashion rockabilly look by adding one of our classic net petticoats under our swing dresses or circle skirts. Switch up your style with the array of colours and our offering of three petticoat lengths. Opt for 26” length for a concealed petticoat, 28” for a peek of colour, or 30” for a beautiful extra feature for your outfit. Get a truly vintage look!

THE BLAST FROM THE PAST BLOUSE

Are you searching for a smart blouse that’s office appropriate and shows off your vintage style? Look no further! You’ll be spoilt for choice with our selection of rockabilly shirts and beautiful blouses. From stripes to spots and delicate embroidery there is something for anyone who wants to re-create fifties fashion. Inject some retro style into your workwear with pussy bow blouses and Peter Pan collar details. Pair with capri pants, high-waisted shorts or a full-circle skirt to finish off the vintage look.

THE SASSY SKIRT

Create the perfect rockabilly look with our collection of vintage-inspired skirts. Run circles around them in our range of circle skirts. Add some swish to your step and try a swing skirt – remember to take a peek at our net petticoats to create a fuller silhouette.

THE PEDAL PUSHER

Formally known as long shorts and clam diggers, our ‘Kendra’ Capri Trousers will assure your fifties fashion doesn’t get caught in a rut or any bicycle chains anytime soon. Famously worn in Sabrina (1954) by Audrey Hepburn and as seen in cinematic favourites such as Grease (1978) these comfortable cotton high waist Capri trousers will be a wardrobe staple in no time. Add a pastel blouse or smart shirt to rock office wear or try adorable motif knitwear for colder months.
