Who is the woman behind the 1960’s oversized signature sunglasses? In the words of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis herself, she was always “a wife and mother first, then First Lady”. A young First Lady, Jackie entered The White House in 1961 at only 31 years of age. With style and strength, she took the fame of the limelight in her stride. Encompassing the American Dream, much like Michelle Obama during Barack’s presidential run from 2009-2017, Jackie ‘O stole the public’s heart both nationally and globally in one swift beat during the Swinging Sixties and for decades to come.

Softly spoken, Jackie was not a quiet, dismissed or hidden woman. Referencing her authority, the former president, JFK once joked at a 1961 state dinner in Paris “I do not think it altogether inappropriate to introduce myself to this audience … I am the man who accompanied Jacqueline Kennedy to Paris, and I’ve enjoyed it.”

Speaking French, Spanish and Italian, Jackie was known for her worldly nature. Locked in history as not only a style icon on the surface, Kennedy was also a woman of courage and depth, who was portrayed on screen and in films by many actresses, most notably by Natalie Portman in ‘Jackie’ (2016). Jackie Kennedy fashion has fed through and inspired runway shows and trends years after her reign in The White House. Just as the American public did during the 60s, many women have tried to emulate the classic Jackie Kennedy style.

From twinsets to paying homage in a Jackie Kennedy costume (fancy dress anyone?) to weekend break knitwear we’re here to simplify the wardrobe that had ladies around the world in awe, giving you a checklist on everything required to re-create her classic look here at Lindy Bop.

Oleg Cassini is the iconic fashion designer behind the wardrobes of both Grace Kelly and former FLOTUS Jacqueline Kennedy. Famed for the clean-cut dress and matching jacket twinsets Cassini created hundreds of outfits for this leading lady, making up much of her daytime looks alongside Chanel suits. Three staples made up her winning ensemble, including the famed twin set suit, double strand to three rows of costume pearls and an affordable pillbox hat.

“Pearls are always appropriate.” – Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Our 1960s inspired collection features styles popularised by Jackie ‘O in the early sixties. The classic Maybelle co-ord consists of a tailored pencil dress with cropped jacket. We also have the Marianne box pleated swing dress twin set. Both these styles are available in several colours of luxurious jacquard fabric and exude timeless elegance.

GET THE LOOK: ‘Maybelle’ Jacquard Twin Set (£65.00), ‘Anuschka’ Croc Leather Block Heel Court Shoes (£65.00) or Black Patent Court Shoes by Tamaris (£35.00) and ‘Inez’ Black Quilted Handbag by Lola Ramona (£68.00).

Jackie Kennedy fashion is more than meets the colour blocking eye. As her life after The White House and the 70s and 80s arrived, her style became a lot more about floaty shapes and less about the shift dress we had become accustomed.

After “one brief shining moment” in Camelot, one accessory tied all her looks together. Sunny outside? No problem! Tired from a night of partying? No issue here! Just want to emulate the timeless chic Jackie Kennedy style? Oversized sunglasses are a must, always.

GET THE LOOK: Classic Beige Belted Trench Coat (£45.00), ‘Ludlow’ Black Leather Shoulder Bag by Yoshi (£85.00), Floral Rabbit Print Headscarf (£4.00) worn as a neck scarf.
